Mathematical compeetitions in India are held in two stages. The first stage, the Regional MO (RMO), is a state level competition and is normally held in late fall, but not necessarily on the same date in each state. About 30 best contestants from each state are invited for the second stage, the National MO (INMO). The NMO is held in early February and nowadays consists of 6 problems to be solved in 4 hours, although the number of problems varied in early years. Judging from the numbering, the first INMO was held in 1986.
India at International Competitions
India takes part at the IMO since 1989. In the recent history the best success of the team at IMO was the 7-th place in 1998 and 2001. The team is selected through selection exams held during a month long IMO training camp in late spring among roughly 30 students. The participants of the training camp are mainly selected through the INMO, although the postal coachings sent throughout the year are also taken into account.
