Math competitions in Italy are held in three stages: I giochi di Archimede in middle November is a collection of multiple-choice questions; La gara di Febbraio in middle February consists of both multiple-choice and free-type questions; and finally Gara di Cesenatico, i.e. the Italian Mathematical Olympiad, is held in early May. The Italian MO was introduced in 1985 and is always held (guess where?) in Cesenatico, apart from the first four years when it was held in Viareggio. The first Italian MO 1985 was actually the same as AIME (American Invitational Mathematical Examination).
Italy at International Competitions
Italy has participated at IMO since 1967. In the recent history the best success of the team at IMO was the 12-th place in 2006. The team is nowadays selected through an additional examination.
