History and System
Mathematical competitions in modern Greece have been held since 1940. These are nowadays held in three rounds in November, January and February, named after the famous ancient Greek mathematicians Thales, Euclid and Archimedes. The final round (Archimedes) was introduced in 1984, and is divided into senior and junior level.
Greece at International Competitions
Greece has participated at IMO since 1979 and at Balkan MO since its foundation 1984. In the recent history the best success of the team at IMO was the 22-nd place in 1996. The team for Balkan MO is selected through the final round (senior level) of the national competition and an additional selection examination which may coincide with the Mediterranean MC (as in 2001 and 2002). Individual performances on Balkan MO are also taken into account in selection of the team. Juniors participate on Junior Balkan MO.
